Getting Started

Misting & Maintenance

- Open the bag, spray the inner walls (not the cake), then reseal with the paperclip.
- Mist once daily with four gentle sprays to maintain humidity and provide fresh air.
Growth & Harvest
- Expect the first pins to appear between 5 and 16 days, depending on the strain.
- Mushrooms emerge in flushes—groups of fruiting bodies. The first two flushes are typically the most abundant.
- Harvest when the veil beneath the cap tears; gently twist and pull using clean hands or gloves to avoid damaging the mycelium.
Side Growth
Mushrooms may also grow from the sides if exposed to light. To harvest side growth:
- Remove the cake from the bag onto a clean surface.
- Harvest side mushrooms, then return the cake to continue growing.
Soaking for Additional Flushes
After harvesting:
- Place the cake in a clean or soaking bag.
- Add fresh water and refrigerate (2–8°C) for 12 hours.
- Remove and unwrap, then repeat the initial setup steps to trigger the next flush.
When to Stop
If no mushrooms appear after the second flush within three weeks, or if the kit changes colour (green, red, grey, or yellow), it may be contaminated—dispose of it responsibly.
Spores & Potency
Delayed harvesting can lead to spore release, darkening the cake and reducing potency. It’s harmless but less visually appealing.
